Why Are My eBay Sales Slow? How to Find the Real Cause

Multezi makes listing software, which this guide mentions where it's relevant.

Why are my eBay sales slow? A sale needs three things: your listing has to be shown, clicked and bought, so the cause sits behind whichever of those numbers fell. Find that number in Seller Hub before you change anything. eBay itself is not slumping. Its gross merchandise volume (GMV) grew 13% in Q3 2026, excluding acquisitions and currency effects, but that growth is concentrated in the US and a few categories, so your eBay sales can be down while eBay's are up.

How to find which number moved

Open Seller Hub, then Performance, then Traffic. Compare the last 30 days with the 30 before, then with the same period last year. The year-on-year view matters more because it takes out most of the season.

Two definitions, from eBay's guide. Click-through rate is eBay page views divided by impressions. eBay sales conversion rate is quantity sold divided by total page views, including views from outside eBay.

What movedWhat it suggestsWhere to look
Impressions down, rates steadyYou are being shown lessSeller level, stock, item specifics, top 20 search spot
Impressions steady, click-through downSeen and passed overMain photo, title, price and postage
Click-through steady, conversion downThe page does not persuadePrice against sold prices, postage, returns, description
Everything lower, rates steadyFewer shoppers or a quiet seasonSame period last year, category trend

eBay defines the metrics. The reading of each pattern is ours, not an eBay procedure. We found no eBay benchmark for either rate, so compare a listing with its own history.

Check the data before you trust it. On 27 June 2026, sellers reported view counts reset to zero and traffic missing from reports while eBay's status page showed no outage. If views fall and orders hold, suspect the report.

Then split impressions into organic and promoted, and by placement. A fall in the top 20 search spot with a steady total suggests lost rank, not lost demand.

Don't use the promoted share of sales for this. Under "any click" attribution, a General campaign fee applies when any buyer buys within 30 days of any click on the ad. It reached the UK on 24 June 2025 and the US on 13 January 2026. A jump in promoted share since then tells you little about whether organic sales fell.

Why are my eBay listings getting no views?

"No views" can mean two things: the listing isn't being shown, or it is shown and not clicked.

If your eBay impressions are down

Start with your seller level, because it affects the whole account. In the UK, Below Standard can mean lower Best Match placement and a block on Promoted Listings, both immediately. It can also add 6 percentage points to your final value fee, or 7 after four consecutive months. On a £10,000 month, we calculated that 6 points is £600. eBay's US-facing guide lists lower placement and an advertising block too. The UK dashboard shows your projected level.

Next, check stock. A Good 'Til Cancelled listing at quantity 0 with the out-of-stock option on stays active but is hidden from search.

Then check item specifics. eBay Australia says listings only appear in filtered search results if the information has been added.

eBay's UK Best Match page names seven factors: match to the search, popularity, price, listing quality, completeness, terms such as returns and handling time, and your record as a seller. eBay publishes no weights, so treat any percentage breakdown you read elsewhere with suspicion.

What about ads? By our reasoning, ads placed above organic results can take attention from them. How much isn't known, because eBay publishes no ad-load figure and has a new system that varies how many ads appear. We found no eBay statement or independent test showing that not advertising penalises your organic rank.

If click-through is down

You are being shown and skipped. Look at what a buyer sees in the results: photo, title, price and postage. eBay asks for a clear title of up to 80 characters and high-quality photos. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what worked.

Why do I get views but no sales on eBay?

eBay views but no sales means buyers reach the page and leave. Start with price.

Product Research, formerly Terapeak, is in the Research tab of Seller Hub. It shows up to three years of sales, accepted Best Offer prices, average postage and sell-through. Filter to the same condition and marketplace, then compare your total price including postage.

If the average sold price has dropped, look at your price. If sold prices have held and your conversion hasn't, look at your listing.

eBay also names free or competitively priced postage, fast dispatch and generous returns as things that help. eBay publishes no uplift figures for any of these, so test on a sample.

Check too whether sales fell or only margin did. UK fees rose on 12 February 2026, including a per-order fee of £0.40 on orders above £10. Any-click attribution can raise ad costs as well. Both hurt, but neither by itself means fewer sales.

Why have my eBay sales suddenly stopped?

Faults do happen. UK listings showed as blank space in search on 8 to 9 March 2025. Search returned blank results on 23 March 2026, and server errors followed on 26 April. eBay publishes no figures on sales lost to outages.

Our rule of thumb: a stop lasting hours or a day or two that lines up with a reported fault may be a glitch. A slowdown lasting weeks probably isn't.

For a sudden drop, check your seller level, stock, any ended ad campaign, and any bulk edit or feed change on the date it began. We found no confirmed 2026 search change, but eBay publishes no change log, so we can't rule one out.

Are eBay sales down for everyone, or just you?

The published numbers don't show eBay sales down overall. They do show very uneven growth.

In eBay's Q3 2026 release, active buyers were 136m excluding Depop and Tise, up 1% on the year. The 147m headline includes those acquisitions. International GMV grew 4% as reported. Excluding acquisitions, International grew nearly 4% and US GMV grew 22%.

Categories are just as uneven. Focus categories grew 24%: collectibles, Motors, fashion and refurbished. With C2C and recommerce, they make up 72% of GMV excluding Depop and grew about 20%. We calculated that everything else was roughly flat to slightly down, about 2% lower. That is our estimate from rounded figures, not an eBay number. It may be why you can be honestly down while the headline is strong.

Here is what isn't known. eBay publishes no sales per seller, and nothing that shows how a typical seller is doing. Treat any claim that sales are down by a set percentage for everyone as a guess.

You can test your own category. If sales in Product Research are down on last year for similar items, the market has moved. If they have held and yours haven't, the problem is closer to home.

Do eBay sales slow down at certain times of year?

Online retail does. eBay publishes no monthly figures, and its annual report says only that it expects volume to follow general consumer buying patterns.

The nearest guide is ONS data for all online retail in Great Britain. It covers retailers, not eBay. From the ONS figures, we calculated sales per week for 2023 to 2025, with 100 as the average week: January 89, February 87, August 92, October 103, November 131, December 129.

So February runs about one-third below November in that data. If your eBay sales slow after Christmas, compare with last February, not last November. Categories differ. In the same retailer data, toys and games are weakest from January to March, and garden peaks in June and July.

eBay sales down? UK sellers face a different market

eBay publishes no UK GMV or buyer figures. On its Q3 call, it reported some improvement in UK consumer sentiment, with shoppers still selective, and double-digit growth in focus categories and C2C. Total UK growth wasn't disclosed.

Private sellers are one suspect. They have paid no final value fees outside motors since 1 October 2024, and UK C2C is growing. More fee-free supply may be competing with business sellers, but nobody has published a measurement.

Clothing has the hardest evidence. The CMA estimated Vinted's share of UK C2C online apparel at 5% to 10% in 2021 and 50% to 60% in 2025, and eBay's at 30% to 40% in 2021 and 10% to 20% in 2025. That excludes business-to-consumer sales, luxury handbags and high-value sneakers. It shows lost share, not a measured fall in anyone's sales.

Elsewhere, rivals are growing around eBay. Ofcom's May 2025 figures, now 18 months old, show eBay steady at 30.7m UK visitors, Temu up from 20.1m to 28.4m and Vinted up from 11.4m to 14.3m. Those figures don't show shoppers switching.

Mood is the weak spot. ONS data for all online retail shows values up 6.8% on the year in September 2026, before adjusting for prices, so people haven't stopped buying online. But the GfK Consumer Confidence Barometer, powered by NIM, fell 11 points to minus 24 in October, and its Major Purchase Index fell 14 points to minus 22. That measures attitudes, not sales, and it is one month.

If you export, costs have risen. The EU has charged a temporary EUR 3 customs duty per item type on goods worth up to EUR 150 from outside the EU since 1 July 2026, and the US $800 exemption ended for all parcels on 29 August 2025. We found no figure for UK sellers on either route.

In the US, the backdrop is stronger. E-commerce grew 12.2% on the year in Q2 2026, before adjusting for prices, so we would check listings and category before blaming the market. Sellers shipping into the US from abroad are the exception: eBay reported slower volume from September 2025.

If you sell at high volume, split the numbers

An account total hides most of what you need. Split by category, by top revenue listings against the long tail, and by organic against promoted impressions.

An account-wide fall points to seller level, stock or the market. A fall in one category or SKU points to listing or price.

Protect your level. Out-of-stock cancellations count as defects. UK Top Rated allows no more than 0.5% and 3 different buyers, so at 1,000 transactions we calculated an allowance of 5 defects, and four oversold orders to different buyers would already break it. A late delivery rate alone can't make a UK seller Below Standard, but it can cost Top Rated status.

For bulk fixes, work through missing item specifics by category, not one listing at a time. Test any bulk change on a sample and keep an export so you can roll back.

What to fix first

  1. Confirm the fall is real, across traffic and orders.
  2. Check seller level and stock.
  3. Work on your top revenue listings: specifics, photo, title.
  4. Compare your total price with sold prices.
  5. If all of that holds and the category is down too, accept that editing listings won't fix a market dip.

How to increase your eBay sales

Once you know what fell and have fixed it, these are the moves most worth making. eBay publishes no uplift figures for them, so test on a sample and judge by your own numbers.

List more of what already sells

Each new listing is another chance to match a buyer's search, so a bigger catalogue gives you more ways to be found. That is our reasoning, not a measured result. We found no controlled study showing how much more listings add, and experienced sellers disagree on it. So don't add stock at random. Use Product Research to pick items with real sold history, then widen the range around what already works for you.

Make bulk listing part of your routine

For most high-volume sellers, the limit on listing more is time, so this is where listing software earns its place. Multezi's Smart Batch Creation turns a batch of images or a list of UPCs or EANs into drafted listings ready for you to publish, and its AI-powered automation rules fill in most of each listing, depending on the rules you set. However you list, check the drafts before they go live, because a bulk mistake is a mistake on every listing.

Raise listing quality across the catalogue

Listing quality and completeness are both named Best Match factors, so the gains can spread across your whole range. Start with your best sellers: complete item specifics, a clear main photo and an accurate title. Then work through the long tail by category, using automation rules or file uploads rather than editing one listing at a time.

Use offers and discounts where there is already interest

A watcher or a basket is a buyer who is nearly there. In the UK, you can send an offer to interested buyers. It must be at least 5% below your Buy It Now price, it goes to the 30 most recent interested buyers, and it lasts 96 hours. Items must have been in a basket for at least 2 days, and you can turn on automatic offers.

If you sell multiples, eBay's US guide describes volume pricing, where a lower price applies automatically when a buyer picks more units. Check which discount tools your account has, because some depend on a Store subscription. If you try Promoted Listings, judge them by profit after ad fees, not by sales attributed to the ads.

Keep stock accurate as you grow

More listings only help if the stock is really there, because out-of-stock cancellations count as defects against your seller level. Keep one accurate stock figure rather than updating listings by hand. Multezi's centralised inventory management keeps stock levels synced automatically.

Don't rely on one marketplace

A slow month on eBay hurts less if it isn't your only sales channel. That is our view rather than a measured result, and every extra channel adds work, so add one when you can keep stock and dispatch accurate. It is also why Multezi is built as a multi-channel tool: eBay is live now, and Shopify, Amazon, TikTok Shop, Etsy and OnBuy are coming soon.

Live selling is another option for some resellers. We look at whether it pays in Is eBay Live worth it?

FAQ

How can I increase my eBay sales?

Find which number fell and fix that first. Then list more of what already sells, use bulk listing tools to do it without losing quality, complete your item specifics, send offers to interested buyers and keep your stock accurate.

What is the slowest month for eBay sales?

eBay doesn't publish one. In ONS data for all online retail in Great Britain, February is usually lowest on our calculation, with January close behind. That isn't eBay data and your category may differ, so check your own history.

What is a good eBay click-through rate?

We found no eBay benchmark. Compare a listing with its own past and with similar listings of yours.

Does ending and relisting on eBay help?

eBay doesn't say it does, and listing age isn't among its named factors. Sellers disagree, and we found no controlled test we could verify. Revise anything with sales or watchers first, and only test relisting on a small sample with neither.

Are eBay sales down since Buyer Protection?

Nobody has shown it. Some UK sellers blame the Buyer Protection fee on private-seller items, but we found no source that measured its effect on sales.

Is eBay dying?

The numbers don't support that: 136m active buyers excluding Depop and Tise, and GMV up 13% in Q3 2026, excluding acquisitions and currency effects. Growth is slowing, though. eBay guided Q4 organic growth to 8% to 10% and expects trading cards to moderate in 2027.
