Is eBay Live Worth It? How Livestreaming & Social Commerce Are Reshaping Reselling
Multezi makes listing software, which this guide mentions where it's relevant.
Is eBay Live worth it? For some resellers, yes. It is worth testing if you sell one-off items that buyers like to see up close, such as trading cards, coins, watches, sneakers or fashion, if you can be on camera regularly, and if your listings and stock are already in good order. It is less likely to pay off for low-value, multi-quantity stock or if you have no time to stream. eBay says the format is growing fast, but those figures are its own, and we found no independent data on what a typical seller earns.
Fees and figures were checked on 5 November 2026.
eBay Live is part of a wider shift towards buying inside video and social apps. Below we cover how it works, what it costs, who it suits and how to get your listings and stock ready for a show.
What is eBay Live and how does it work for sellers?
eBay Live is eBay's livestream shopping format. A seller hosts a show, and buyers watch, chat and buy in real time. It started as an invite-only service in the US in 2022. In the UK it was first trialled in 2024 and rolled out more widely from 2025. On its Q3 2026 earnings call, eBay's chief executive said it was active in seven markets.
Here is how it works for sellers, based on the UK help page on livestream selling:
- You set up a show in Live Studio on a computer, then stream from a phone camera or from broadcasting software such as OBS.
- You sell by auction or Buy It Now during the stream. Best Offer and reserve prices aren't available, and a bid in the final seconds extends the auction.
- One show can hold up to 750 listings, imported from your existing listings or created from a template.
- Payment is taken automatically, and the Live policy treats a bid or a Buy It Now purchase as a binding commitment.
- Combined postage applies for 8 hours from the scheduled start, after which you can combine orders and print labels.
- Buyers get a video receipt of the moment their item sold, kept for 180 days.
On the same call, eBay described multistreaming to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitch, and AI moderation of chat, audio and video. Trade press reported from eBay Open UK that eligible UK sellers can now show the same stream to US buyers.
How much does eBay Live cost in the UK?
eBay Live has its own fees, separate from standard final value fees. You pay a commission plus payment processing, both worked out on the total sale including postage and tax. There is no insertion fee. These are the rates on the UK and US Live pricing pages:
| Fee | UK (before VAT) | US |
|---|---|---|
| Commission, most categories | 6% | 6% |
| Commission, coins, bullion and sneakers | 4% | 4% |
| Commission cap | £100 per item | $100 per item |
| Payment processing | 2.42% + £0.30 per order | 2.9% + $0.30 per order |
| Insertion fee | None | None |
The UK page's own example puts processing on a £100 order at £2.72. Adding 6% commission, we calculated total Live fees of £8.72 on that order, plus VAT. The US page says both parts appear on your invoice as one combined final value fee.
According to the UK help page on Live fees:
- Live rates apply only to purchases made during a Live event. Later orders pay standard fees.
- Promoted Listings General fees aren't charged on items that sell through Live.
- Until 31 December 2026, the per-order fee drops to £0.10 on orders of £10 or less.
For business sellers in most categories, Live works out cheaper than normal selling. Value Added Resource's analysis put typical US Live fees at about 8.9% plus $0.30 per order, against 13.6% for a typical seller without a Store subscription. For the UK, check your category on the business seller fees page. Private sellers are different. They pay no final value fee outside motors on normal listings, so Live is not a cheaper route for them.
Is eBay Live worth it? Who it suits and who it doesn't
Start with what eBay says. These are company claims that haven't been independently audited:
- On its Q3 2026 call, eBay said Live sales (gross merchandise volume) are running at several billion dollars a year, with growth well into triple digits. TechCrunch reported about 8x growth the quarter before.
- eBay said Live sellers sold roughly twice as much through the normal marketplace as in live events over the past year.
- It said Live buyers spend 70% more than comparable buyers, without defining the comparison.
Those numbers need context. eBay hasn't published actual Live sales or seller numbers, and gives no UK figure. Value Added Resource points out that growth comes from a small, restricted base, that several markets are under a year old, and that lower fees, buyer coupons and advertising have helped. An invitation-only 0% commission promotion ran until 29 October 2026, it reported. Our own reading is that the most active sellers are the likeliest to try Live, so these figures don't show that Live causes the extra sales.
eBay's Q3 2026 results named collectibles, led by trading cards, as its largest growth contributor, and on the call it named fashion, handbags, watches and home and garden as strong Live categories. Its 2027 planning assumes trading card growth will moderate, so don't count on the card boom lasting.
| eBay Live is more likely to suit you if | It is less likely to suit you if |
|---|---|
| You sell one-off or graded items buyers want to see up close | You sell low-value, multi-quantity stock |
| You have a business account with business policies set up | You sell as a private seller with fee-free normal listings |
| You can stream regularly with a decent phone, light and microphone | You can't commit regular time on camera |
| You have enough stock to fill a show and replace what sells | Your stock is thin or slow to replace |
| You can pack a batch of orders quickly after a show | Your dispatch is already stretched |
That table is our judgement from eBay's category data and help pages, not a measured result. We found no eBay guidance on how long or how often to stream.
eBay Live vs Whatnot and TikTok Shop: which should you try?
Each platform starts from a different place.
- eBay Live builds on your existing eBay account, listings and buyers.
- Whatnot is a live-first marketplace in North America, the UK and Europe, with roots in collectibles. It reported more than $8bn in live sales in 2025, a company figure, according to CNBC. Its help centre says sellers must ship within two business days.
- TikTok Shop has large UK reach. The UK sellers highlighted in Retail Gazette's coverage were mostly brands in beauty, jewellery and food rather than resellers.
We couldn't confirm Whatnot's or TikTok Shop's current UK seller fees from their official pages, so we don't quote them. Rates changed several times in 2026, so compare platforms on a real order using each one's own fee page.
Facebook and Instagram are no longer full live shopping options. Meta closed Facebook Live Shopping in October 2022 and removed product tagging from Instagram live broadcasts in March 2023. You can still broadcast, but without built-in live checkout. We found no live selling feature on Vinted or Depop.
How do you sell on eBay Live in the UK?
The UK help page says hosting is open to eligible business sellers and sole proprietors who meet eBay's seller, risk, policy and category requirements. New sellers apply through the eBay Live seller page. Existing sellers with business policies set up may get access through the Live Studio link in Seller Hub.
TechCrunch reported that eBay moved to self-service onboarding in July 2026, and Value Added Resource reported that UK self-service registration began in September 2026. Some sellers are still placed on a waitlist, and some eBay UK pages still describe a beta, so expect the process to keep changing. Listed UK categories run from collectibles, luxury and sneakers to apparel, home and garden, and electronics.
Read the Live policy before your first show. It bans contests, raffles, off-platform dealing and shill bidding, and words such as rare, limited edition and exclusive must be accurate. Case breaks are for approved sellers only, and minors can't host.
What isn't known: eBay hasn't published full UK eligibility criteria, and we found no official statement on whether private sellers can host.
How do you get your listings and stock ready for a live show?
Most guides skip this part. A show draws on the same stock as your normal listings, and eBay says Live sellers still sell about twice as much through ordinary listings, so preparation pays off in both places.
- Choose the lineup from items with real demand. Check recent sold prices in Product Research so you know what each item is worth before bidding starts.
- Write accurate, specific listings. Value Added Resource reported that eBay's Live policy discourages generic placeholder listings, and you may have to accept a return if an item doesn't match what was shown.
- Fill in titles, photos and item specifics as you would for any listing. Items that don't sell in the show still need to sell afterwards, so the usual eBay listing tips still apply.
- Import existing listings where you can, rather than making separate copies. Insertion fees on imported listings are credited, and Live Studio can create several listings with the same details for similar items. Our inference is that one listing per item also lowers the chance of selling it twice.
- Stage and number every item in show order, and show flaws clearly on camera. The video receipt records what the buyer saw.
- Have packaging and labels ready for a batch of orders when the combined postage window closes.
Stock is where live selling gets risky if you are selling on multiple platforms, because a show creates a burst of sales in a short window and each channel only knows the quantity you've given it. eBay, for example, will accept an order on a listing that still shows one available, even if the item has just sold elsewhere, as its help page on multi-quantity listings explains. Out-of-stock cancellations on your normal eBay listings count as defects against your seller level.
So keep one stock figure and update every channel as soon as something sells. If you list across several channels, this is where software can help. Multezi is AI-powered multi-channel listing software that helps you create listings in bulk and keep stock levels synced, so you work from one accurate stock figure. It handles listings and stock, not the show itself, and you can see which marketplaces it connects to.
Finally, allow for returns. In the UK, buyers from business sellers generally have a 14-day right to cancel Live purchases, but not a change-of-mind right on Rip n Ship or case breaks, according to the Live policy. Statutory rights still apply.
Is social commerce changing how resellers sell?
Yes, but gradually. eMarketer estimates UK social commerce sales at about £11.75bn in 2026 and expects double-digit growth to continue to more than £16bn by 2029, while saying the era of very fast growth is ending. These are estimates.
In July 2026, TikTok told Retail Gazette that more than 300,000 UK small businesses sell on TikTok Shop, that sales through its live sessions were up 55% year on year, and that more than 6,000 live shopping broadcasts run in the UK every day. These are TikTok's own figures and haven't been independently audited.
In the US, eMarketer estimates that livestream ecommerce sales grew nearly 50% in 2025 to about $14.6bn. An eMarketer chart estimates that just over 20% of US digital buyers would buy through a livestream in 2025.
So live selling is growing but still a minority habit, and for most resellers it is an extra channel rather than a replacement. In our view the bigger change is how many places the same stock is offered at once, which makes accurate listings and stock records more important, not less.
Does eBay Live affect your normal eBay sales?
Some sellers worry that Live takes sales from ordinary listings, and Value Added Resource suggests some Live sales may simply have moved from them. We found no data that measures the effect either way.
One change protects your account. From 15 October 2026, eBay no longer counts Live transactions in seller standards or service metrics, including earlier ones, and will assess Live performance separately, according to its UK seller performance page. Value Added Resource reported that Live sales are also excluded from Top Rated Plus eligibility.
If your normal sales have dropped, don't assume Live is the reason. Use your traffic data to find the real cause of a sales slowdown before you change how you sell.
FAQ
Is eBay Live free?
There is no insertion fee. Each sale pays commission plus payment processing, which in the UK is 6% (4% for coins, bullion and sneakers) plus 2.42% and £0.30 per order, before VAT.
Is eBay Live profitable?
It can be, but we found no independent data on typical seller earnings. eBay's figures on higher sales and spending are its own and unaudited. Your result depends on your category, how often you stream and how well your listings and stock are prepared.
Is eBay Live gambling?
The Live policy bans contests, raffles and random draws, allows mystery boxes only with accurate descriptions and limits case breaks to approved sellers. In the UK, buyers get no change-of-mind cancellation right on Rip n Ship or case breaks. This isn't legal advice.
Do eBay Live sales count towards my seller level?
No. Since 15 October 2026, Live transactions, including earlier ones, no longer count in seller standards or service metrics, according to eBay's UK seller performance page.
Can private sellers use eBay Live in the UK?
The UK help page names eligible business sellers and sole proprietors as hosts. We found no official statement about private sellers, so check the eBay Live seller page for your account.
